Wilkes Women's Tennis Defeats FDU-Florham 9-0 in MAC Freedom Opener
MADISON, N.J. – The Wilkes University women's tennis team traveled to FDU-Florham on Saturday afternoon for their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom opener and blanked the Devils 9-0 to improve to 6-3 overall.
Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) breezed through their #1 match 8-0 to kick off doubles play. The #3 pairing of Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) backed that up with an 8-2 win before #2 Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) doubled up their opponents to finish off the sweep.
Yakhnis and Vasarkovy also had little trouble in their singles match as they began the format by winning 6-1, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively, to clinch a Wilkes win.
In the #2 spot, Varela-Seri won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 which was followed by the match of the day in the #4 spot by Zielinski. The junior didn't surrender a game in her first set but her opponent responded by taking the second one 6-2 to force a deciding third set. Zielinski got back on track in that set, winning it by a 6-4 margin.
The navy and gold finished out the match in easy fashion as #6 Rachel Thomas (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) won 6-1, 6-2 while #5 Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) played to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Wilkes' next match will also be its home opener on Saturday, April 6th at 1:00 p.m. versus the Manhattanville Valiants at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
