Wilkes Women's Tennis Wins Home Opener over Misericordia
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team took to the court at the Ralston Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon for the first time this spring and handed the visiting Cougars a 9-0 loss in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play.
The victory improves the Colonels to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the MAC Freedom.
#3 Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) started the match by blanking their opponents 8-0. Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) teamed up with Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South), who in her return to the lineup, helped lead the Colonels to an 8-1 win in #2 doubles. The navy and gold took the third doubles point when the #1 duo of Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) upended the Cougars 8-3.
#1 Vasarkovy continued her strong play in her singles match as she breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. #6 Nicole Gaetani (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) backed that up with a 6-2, 6-0 showing to clinch the match for Wilkes.
#2 Zielinski and #4 Markle kept the momentum in Wilkes' favor as they won in identical sets of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-3 respectively.
#3 Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win before #5 Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
The Colonels hit the road on Saturday, April 13th when they head to DeSales for a 9:00 a.m. MAC Freedom match.
