Wilkes Women's Tennis Handles Baldwin Wallace
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Wilkes University women's tennis team came out on top against the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets by a score of 7-2 to improve to 3-0 in the spring.
In doubles action, #1 Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) had a tough time getting anything going against the Yellow Jackets before eventually falling 2-8.
The #2 pairing of Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Nicole Gaetani (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) picked up their teammates with a hard fought 8-4 win that when added with the forfeit at #3 doubles gave the Colonels a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Baldwin Wallace was also forfeiting the #6 singles spot which made #3 Erin Volutza's (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) 6-2, 6-0 win pull Wilkes to within one match of securing a win at 4-1.
#2 Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) would play an epic three-setter as she battled back from dropping the first set 3-6 to win the second 6-4 before taking the super breaker (1-0) 10-5 to clinch the match for the Colonels at 5-1.
#4 Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) found herself down 4-5 in her first set but rallied to 6-6 before winning the breaker 7-3 to take the set 7-6. She wouldn't look back from there as she jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set before her opponent forfeited due to injury.
Nicole Gaetani (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) had a strong showing in the #5 spot cruising to a 6-3, 6-0 win before Yakhnis dropped a 1-6, 6-7 (7-4) match in the #1 spot, however the Colonels had already done enough to beat the Yellow Jackets by a final score of 7-2.
Wilkes will take the court again tomorrow as the originally postponed game against Warner University has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. at the Chaplin Courts.
