Wilkes Women's Tennis Pushes Win Streak to Three
CENTER VALLEY, PA. – The Wilkes University women's tennis team hit the road to face off with Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom foe DeSales on Saturday and headed home with an 8-1 victory to improve to 3-0 in the conference.
The Colonels also improved to 8-3 overall on the season.
Wilkes swept doubles as #1 Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) were firing on all cylinders in an 8-1 victory. Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) played well in their return to the #2 doubles spot as they picked up an 8-2 win. #3 Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) and Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) made it two wins in two matches this week as the new pairing bested DeSales 8-6.
#1 Vasarkovy steamrolled through her singles match 6-1, 6-0.
#2 Varela-Seri suffered the only loss of the day as she battled back from a 4-6 first set loss to win the second 6-2 and force a super breaker. The junior eventually lost the thrilling super breaker 10-12 to drop the match 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10).
#3 Yakhnis had little trouble in her match as she won in straight sets 6-2. 6-1. #4 Zielinski went to the Colonels second super breaker of the day but this time it ended in Wilkes' favor as the junior won the super break 10-5 to take the match 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5).
#5 Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and #6 Rachel Thomas (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) rounded out the lineup with a pair of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-0 wins respectively.
Wilkes returns to the Ralston Athletic Complex on Sunday, April 14th when it hosts Keystone for an 11:00 a.m. match.
