Boccio Nets Four Senior Day Goals for Wilkes Women's Lacrosse

EDWARDSVILLE – Senior Kyra Boccio (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) scored four goals and assisted on another as the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team lost a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest to visiting Delaware Valley University 17-11 on Senior Day at Schmidt Stadium.

The loss Saturday afternoon drops Wilkes to 6-6 overall and to 0-4 in the MAC Freedom. Delaware Valley improved to 4-6 overall and to 1-3 in league games.

The Aggies scored the first goal just 1:08 into the 30-minute first half. The Colonels would answer at the 26:18 mark as Boccio found the net for the first time after Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) picked up a ground ball after a save by the Aggies goalkeeper.

Delaware Valley would regain the lead on a free position goal but Boccio answered with her own free position shot into the back of the net to tie the score at 2-2 with 25:20 left in the first half. Just over a minute later the Aggies went back ahead 3-2. Boccio would complete her hat trick at the 17:20 mark as she tied the game for the third time.

A five-goal run by the visitors over a span of 6:43 pushed the Aggies to an 8-3 lead with 7:42 left in the first half. Wilkes got momentum back on its side when Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) scored her 16th of the season with 32 seconds left. After Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton) won the draw control, Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) connected with 15 seconds left pull the Colonels to within three goals at halftime.

Lerch scored her first of the game just 13 seconds into the second half after she won another draw. The goal capped a run of three goals within 45 seconds to hurdle the Colonels back into the game. At the 26:43 mark Lerch scored again off an assist from Duman to cap the four-goal run by Wilkes to make the score 8-7.

Sabrina Butler answered with two goals for the Aggies but then Burkhardt scored her 31st of the year off an assist from Allyson Joly (Lincoln, RI/Tilton) to make the score 10-8 with 18:43 left. Delaware Valley then went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-8 lead by the 6:36 mark.

Wilkes attempted a late comeback as it scored the next three goals but still trailed 16-11 with 3:48 remaining in the game. Boccio found Lerch cutting to the net between two defenders as the freshman completed her hat trick on the day with her 25th goal of the season. Boccio followed with her team-leading 39th goal and Devitt capped the scoring off a pass from Lerch for her 16th goal of the year.

Amanda Dietrich made two of her 15 saves before Delaware Valley scored the final goal of the game with 46 seconds showing on the clock to make it 17-11.

Boccio, who was recognized before the game with a Senior Day ceremony, led Wilkes with five points. Lerch finished with four points while Duman and Burkhardt each had two. Burkhardt also had a game-high seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) made 13 saves.
