Fourth Quarter Push From Misericordia Lifts Cougars Over Wilkes Men's Lacrosse 13-10

EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Misericordia University outscored Wilkes University 5-2 over the final quarter to break open a tie game after three as the Cougars posted an important 13-10 MAC Freedom victory over the Colonels Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium.

Wilkes fell to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in MAC Freedom contests while Misericordia improved to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in league games.

With the game tied at 8-8 entering the fourth quarter, the Cougars went to the offensive early in the final frame scoring three unanswered goals at the 12:29, 11:22 and 9:56 marks to take an 11-8 lead. Wilkes' Alex Myers (Cortland, NY/Cortland) responded for the Colonels scoring his 21st goal of the year unassisted at the 9:34 mark cutting into the deficit.

After a man-up goal from Misericordia, Nico Lorenzo (Howell, NJ/Howell) kept Wilkes in the game with a strike off a Myers assist with just 3:32 remaining and the Colonels still trailing 12-10. Patrick Luzzi then put the game out of reach in the final minute taking a loose ball and scoring in an empty net as the Colonels tried scrambling for possession late.

Myers got things going early for Wilkes scoring back-to-back unassisted goals to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead with 11:53 left in the opening stanza. After a Misericordia goal cut the advantage in half, John Wink (Glenside, PA/Abington) and Eric Ormsby (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) scored consecutive goals to give Wilkes a 4-1 lead with 6:42 left in the quarter.

Three more Colonel goals pushed the Wilkes lead to 7-2 early in the second quarter, its largest advantage of the game, as Ormsby, Ethan Weaver (Olney, MD/James Hubert Blake) (man-up) and Connor Daly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) cashed in on the three-goal run.

From there Misericordia responded scoring six of the game's next seven goals to send the teams into the break tied at 8-8. The third quarter saw the teams go scoreless setting up the final 15 minutes to decide the outcome.

Myers led the Wilkes attack with five points on three goals and two assists while Ormsby finished with four points on three goals and one helper. Weaver, Wink, Daly and Lorenzo each recorded one goal to round out the Colonel scoring.

Andrew Moynihan (Easton, MA/Lawrence Academy) was excellent in the circle going 20-for-27 on faceoff attempts. Carter Whittemore (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) made 15 saves playing all 60 minutes in net.

Wilkes remains idle through the Easter break before returning to MAC Freedom play Wednesday with a road game at DeSales University at 7:00 p.m. in Center Valley, Pa.
