Wilkes Women's Tennis Blanks Eastern
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team dispatched the Eastern Eagles 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
With the victory, Wilkes stands at 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom.
The Colonels cruised through doubles play as the #3 pairing of Nicole Gaetani (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) kicked off play with an 8-0 win. After #2 Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) racked up another 8-0 victory, #1 Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) earned the doubles sweep by taking their match by an 8-1 margin.
#2 Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) made her return to the singles lineup with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win before #3 Rachel Thomas (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) clinched a Colonels victory in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
After Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) won her #4 singles match 6-1, 6-2, #5 Cieri breezed to another 6-0, 6-0 win for the navy and gold.
Varela-Seri had the toughest match of the day in the #1 spot but grinded out a 6-3, 7-5 win for Wilkes before #6 Gaetani secured the shutout with the third 6-0, 6-0 match of singles play.
Wilkes will take on rival King's next Wednesday, April 24th at 3:30 p.m. in another MAC Freedom match.
