Durnin Deals as Wilkes Baseball Splits with Delaware Valley
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Noah Durnin (Bath, PA/Northampton) had a dominating performance on the mound in game one as the Wilkes University baseball team split its Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader at Delaware Valley University on Thursday afternoon, taking game one 5-1 before dropping the second contest 4-1.
The Colonels are now 13-18 overall and 7-11 in conference.
Both teams remained scoreless in game one until Wilkes pushed across a run in the top of the third. Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) led off the inning with a single to center, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt), and came into score on a single from Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley).
The Colonels doubled their lead in the top of the fourth when Vinny Bobbin (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) hit an infield single that brought in Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton), who got on with a one-out walk and moved to third on a single from Jack Hines (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne).
Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) increased Wilkes' lead to 4-0 with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth that scored Wing, who led off the frame with a single.
Delaware Valley added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Colonels finished the scoring in the top of the seventh with an unearned run that scored Gonzalez.
Durnin earned his fourth consecutive victory on the mound, going the full seven innings while allowing one unearned run on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Wing (2-2, one run), Fischer (2-3, one RBI), and Gonzalez (2-3, two runs) led the offense in game one for Wilkes.
The Aggies started the scoring in game two with one run in the bottom of the first.
The Colonels tied the score in the top of the fourth when three consecutive one-out singles to load the bases led to a sacrifice fly from Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg), allowing Nicholas Capozzi (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) to come in from third.
Delaware Valley crossed the plate three times in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a solo home run and a two-run home run in the inning.
J.T. Hibschman fell to 2-3 on the season, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings with zero walks and four strikeouts.
Capozzi led the Colonels at the plate in game two, finishing 3-for-3 with one run scored.
Wilkes returns to action on Tuesday when it will travel to Lebanon Valley College for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game.
