Wilkes Baseball Powers Past Immaculata with Season-High 19 Runs

KINGSTON – The Wilkes University baseball team powered its way to 10 extra-base hits during a 19-7 non-conference victory over visiting Immmaculata University at Artillery Park Tuesday afternoon. The 19 runs were a season-high for the Colonels and the most since the team scored 23 runs back in 2015.

The victory improved Wilkes to 11-14 overall while Immaculata dropped to 12-10.

Tony Molitoris (Hanover Twp., PA/Holy Redeemer) set the tone on the mound for the Colonels as he sat down the Mighty Macs in order to start the game in the top of the first inning.

Brandon Reno (Hunlock Creek, PA/Northwest Area) reached with two-outs in the bottom of the first inning with a double to right and then scored on Nicholas Capozzi's (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) double to left. Capozzi then scored when Jared Angerman (Northampton, PA/Northampton Area) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop as the Colonels took a 2-0 lead into the second inning.

Matt Reinert (Telford, PA/Souderton) then belted his first home run of the season and second of his career over the left field wall to lead off the second inning. A double by Jack Fischer (River Vale, NJ/Pascack Valley) would score Jorge Gonzalez (Reading, PA/Conrad Weiser) who also doubled himself and then Reno would bring in Fischer with a single to left as Wilkes took a 5-0 lead at the end of the second.

The Mighty Macs scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth. The unearned run came on two hits and one Wilkes error.

Wilkes would get back into the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth when Capozzi and Angerman reached with one-out walks. Both runners would move up a base on a wild pitch and then Capozzi would score on a sacrifice fly by Nick Malatesta (Bloomsburg, PA/Bloomsburg). After Reinert walked Angerman scored when Brady Wing (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) reached on an error. Wing and Reinert then pulled off a double steal that allowed Reinert to cross the plate as the Colonels pushed ahead 8-1 after five innings.

Immaculata hit a leadoff home run in the sixth to get a run back but then Wilkes sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame as it scored six runs on seven hits. Michael Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) led off by beating out a hit to third and the proceeded to steal second and third before coming into score on Reno's RBI-single to right. After Capozzi singled to third, pinch hitter Alex Halladay (West Chester, PA/Bayard Rustin) hit a two-run triple over the centerfielder's head to score Reno and Capozzi. Jack Hines (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) then pinch ran for Halladay and scored on a balk. Wing then doubled to plate Reinert who had a base hit and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Gonzalez's second double of the game then brought in Wing as Wilkes increased its lead to 14-2.

Immaculata hit a three-run double in the top of the seventh to make it 14-5 but Wilkes then added five more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Barry (Jonestown, PA/Northern Lebanon) connected on a home run over the left field fence for his first career hit to lead off the inning. Malatesta had a two-run double and Reinert and Vincent Uzzi (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) each hit a sacrifice fly as Wilkes went ahead 19-5.

A triple and a sacrifice fly helped the Mighty Macs get two runs back in the ninth but the Colonels enjoyed the 19-7 victory.

Molitoris picked up his second consecutive win to move to 2-0 on the season. He went 6.0 innings allowing two runs, one earned on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Timmy Newell dropped to 1-4 with the loss as the Mighty Macs starter went 4.1 innings allowing seven runs, five earned on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Capozzi went 3-for-3 with two walks, one RBI and three runs scored while Reno finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's and three runs and Reinert put up a 2-for-2 performance with two walks, two RBI's and three runs as the trio combined for eight of the Colonels 16 hits and nine of the 19 runs scored. Malatesta led Wilkes with three RBI's.

The Colonels will begin an important Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom series on Thursday at cross-town rival King's College with a nine-inning game starting at 3:30 p.m. Wilkes will host the doubleheader at Artillery Park on Saturday.
