Wilkes Women's Tennis Earns Trip to MAC Freedom Championship
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team defeated Manhattanville 5-1 in their Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) semifinal on Wednesday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex to move on to Saturday's championship.
Wilkes stands at 14-4 overall on the season and one win away from their 13th straight MAC Freedom title.
The #1 doubles match was the only one the Colonels dropped on the day as #1 Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) lost a tight affair 8-7. Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) cruised to an 8-0 victory in their #2 doubles match while #3 Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) and Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) lost just one game en route to an 8-1 win.
Wilkes continued their strong play in singles with a trio of 6-0, 6-0 wins from Saliyev, Zielinski and Erin Volutza (Sinking Spring, PA/Lancaster Catholic) to clinch the match.
With Wilkes earning the decision at 5-1, the other three singles matches were left unfinished.
Wilkes will host #2 DeSales in the championship match on Saturday, after they defeated #3 FDU-Florham 5-2 on Wednesday, with the time to be determined.
