Wilkes Women's Tennis Wins MAC Freedom Title over DeSales
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University women's tennis team defeated DeSales 5-0 on Saturday to win their 13th straight Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom title and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The victory improves the Colonels record to 15-4 overall.
Wilkes won two doubles matches with ease as #1 Jordan Vasarkovy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) took their match 8-1 while Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) and Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) dispatched the Bulldogs by the same score in their #2 doubles match. Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) and Dana Saliyev (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) faced a little more resistance at #3 doubles but won handily 8-4 as the Colonels headed to singles up 3-0.
#5 Zielinski continued her strong play by making quick work of her opponent 6-1, 6-1 as Vasarkovy dropped two games in her first set before shutting out DeSales in the second to win 6-2, 6-0.
Since Wilkes clinched the match at 5-0 the other singles matches were stopped in progress and remain unfinished.
Vasarkovy was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
The Colonels will find out who they face in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday, May 6th when the selections are announced at noon.
