Wilkes Men's Tennis Season Ends in NCAA Second Round with 5-0 Loss to #4 Amherst
AMHERST, MA – The Wilkes University men's tennis team saw its season come to a close falling 5-0 to No. 4 Amherst College in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Amherst Tennis Center.
Wilkes concluded its year with a 15-7 overall record. Amherst improved to 17-4 overall and will host Mary Washington at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow, with a trip to the national quarterfinals in Kalamazoo, Michigan on the line.
Amherst took all three doubles flights with an 8-0 win at No. 2 and 8-3 victory at No. 1 pairs. At No. 3 doubles,
Jonathan White (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) and
Chris Maderitz (York, PA/Central York) held a 5-4 lead, but couldn't hold on as Amherst battled to win four straight games and earn an 8-5 win and a third point for the Mammoths.
Amherst then clinched the match in singles play with straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 6 respectively.
Courtney Murphy (Bronx, NY/Christopher Columbus) was a winner in set one 6-2 over 18
th ranked Sean Wei and trailed 5-2 in the second set before play was halted.
