Baldwin's Overtime Goal Lifts Wilkes Field Hockey Over Susquehanna in Connie Harnum Opener
SELINSGROVE, PA –
Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) notched the game-winning goal :42 into the overtime period to lift the visiting Wilkes University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over host Susquehanna University in the opener of the Connie Harnum Classic Friday afternoon.
Wilkes improves to 1-0 on the year and advances to the championship game tomorrow. Susquehanna drops to 0-1 overall and will play in the consolation contest on Saturday afternoon.
Baldwin broke free early in the overtime period and found the back of the net to put the Colonels into the title game breaking a 1-1 tie which lasted through three quarters of play.
Hunter Pitman scored for the hosts 4:05 into the first quarter off a pass from Heather Casey.
Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) wasted little time tying the game at 1-1 when she scored off a cross from
Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) from the right side four minutes later.
From there the teams went scoreless over the next 45 minutes of play until Baldwin's overtime heroics lifted the Colonels to victory.
Wilkes held a 12-10 shot advantage while garnering four penalty corners to Susquehanna's eight attempts.
Vanessa Damgaard (Elysburg, PA/Columbia Montour Area Vocational Technical School) recorded her first collegiate victory in net for Wilkes finishing with two saves.
Wilkes will await the winner of the Salisbury/Kean game two contest of the classic tomorrow in the championship game at 2:00 p.m.
