Baldwin Strikes Late to Lift Wilkes Field Hockey Over Moravian 1-0

Baldwin Strikes Late to Lift Wilkes Field Hockey Over Moravian 1-0

EDWARDSVILLE – Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) scored with :45 left in the fourth quarter to propel host Wilkes University to a 1-0 shutout win over Moravian College Wednesday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

Wilkes improved to 4-3 overall following the non-conference victory. Moravian dropped to 1-5 overall after the road defeat.

Wilkes dominated possession throughout the first half outshooting Moravian 12-2 in the first 30 minutes. Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) provided the Colonels best opportunity of the half late in the second quarter when her shot from five feet out was saved by the Moravian goalie with her right pad earning Wilkes' fifth penalty corner.

Another offensive push came midway through the third quarter as Morghan Murphy's (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) two shots up close were stopped followed by another save off the stick of Kelley that kept the game scoreless. Wilkes continued to pepper the Moravian goalie with 19 shots through three quarters.

Moravian had a good chance to put one in the back of the cage late in the fourth quarter as a shot from Kylie Mastricola was stopped by Mya Zak (South Wales, NY/Holland) and the rebound just caromed wide out of the reach of a waiting Greyhound forward.

From there it was the heroics of Baldwin as she took the pass from Lauren Shiplett (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) off of a penalty corner, with Wilkes down a player after a yellow card was issued to Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston), and deposited the ball in the back of the cage to lift the Colonels to victory.

Wilkes outshot Moravian 23-5 including 13-3 in shots on goal. The Colonels also earned 10 penalty corners to Moravian's seven attempts.

Zak recorded her first career victory in net finishing with three saves for Wilkes.

Wilkes returns to action Saturday with a non-conference road contest at Wilson College starting at 1:00 p.m.
