Murphy's Two Goals Lead Wilkes Field Hockey Past Wilson 3-0
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) found the back of the cage twice to lead the Wilkes University field hockey team to a 3-0 win in non-conference action at Wilson College on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels improved to 5-3 with the victory.
Wilkes dominated play in the first quarter, getting off six shots without allowing a single one while earning five penalty corners and allowing two.
Julia Kiss (Bangor, PA/Bangor) broke the scoreless tie in the 27th minute when Lauren Shiplett (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) lined a shot off Wilson's goalkeeper that bounced to Kiss for a put-back score. The score remained 1-0 at halftime as the Colonels continued to control play, outshooting the Phoenix 10-1 through the first 30 minutes while taking nine penalty corners to two for Wilson.
Murphy got on the board in the 39th minute with an assist from Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) after Wilkes continued to push the pace of play to start the second half.
Murphy finished the scoring in the 54th minute with an assist from Kiss when she scored off her own rebound.
The Colonels finished with 18 shots while allowing seven, finding the cage 14 times while allowing four attempts to reach goalkeeper Mya Zak (South Wales, NY/Holland).
Zak earned her second career win, making all four stops for her second-consecutive shutout.
Wilkes returns to action on Monday when it will host Bryn Athyn for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Schmidt Stadium.
