Wilkes Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 in Double Overtime to McDaniel

EDWARDSVILLE – A penalty kick goal in the 108th minute lifted McDaniel College to a 1-0 victory over the Wilkes University men's soccer team from Schmidt Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The Colonels are now 1-1-0 on the 2019 season.

McDaniel had the first opportunity on net in the ninth minute, but Wilkes goalkeeper Russell Rauh (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington Senior) was up to the task.

Wilkes had the next two opportunities, as Kyle Bentz (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill) challenged a ball played into the box but headed it out-of-bounds. Gabriel Nieves (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland Senior) got the Colonels first attempt at the Green Terror keeper in the 19th minute, forcing the keeper to dive to his left to keep Wilkes off the board.

McDaniel found itself with an opportunity in the 27th minute with a shot from middle of the field 15 yards out, but the ball rolled off the Green Terror player and safely into Rauh's waiting hands.

Rauh helped keep McDaniel off the board again 32nd minute when Wilkes turned the ball over deep in its defensive area, but the Green Terror forward played the ball right to Rauh from the right side of the field, keeping the score locked at 0-0.

After the first 45, the score remained equal at zero.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were a defensive stalemate as neither team was able to generate a solid chance on net. The score remained locked at zero after regular time as both teams headed into overtime looking to remain perfect for 2019.

Anthony Lazzareschi (Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken) got a golden opportunity in the 92nd minute when as he corralled a pass with one man to beat and lined a shot towards McDaniel's goal, but it was right at the keeper, maintaining the scoreless tie. The score remained blank after 100 minutes as the game headed toward a second overtime.

A foul in the box at 107:16 gave the Green Terror a penalty shot, which was sent to the lower right corner, just barely out of Rauh's reach to end the game.

Rauh was exceptional for Wilkes in the cage, stopping six shots. Aaron Bilbie made three saves for McDaniel.

The Colonels return to the pitch on Saturday when they will travel to Moravian College for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference match-up.
