Wilkes Field Hockey Defeats Bryn Athyn 7-0
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University field hockey team defeated Bryn Athyn College 7-0 under the Monday night lights of Schmidt Stadium in non-conference action
The Colonels improved to 6-3 overall with the victory.
Wilkes got the scoring started in the fifth minute off a penalty corner when Lauren Shipplett played it from outside the top left of the circle to Zoe Stepanski (Dallas, PA/Dallas) in the bottom left, who took a shot that was going wide to the right before Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) tapped it into an empty net.
The Colonels doubled their score in the seventh minute with a goal from Lauren Baldwin (Clarks Summit, PA/Lackawanna Trail) assisted by Stepanski on another penalty corner. A third goal was added in the tenth minute by Cheyenne Mazzocca (Slatington, PA/Northern Lehigh) when Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) corralled her own rebound and found Mazzocca for a tap-in.
The second quarter contained considerably less scoring as neither team found the back of the cage. The first half was decidedly tilted in one direction, however, as Wilkes outshot the Lions 23-0 including a 13-0 advantage in shots-on-goal. The Colonels earned 11 penalty corners without allowing a single one.
Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas) continued the scoring in the 32nd minute when she notched an unassisted tally after collecting a loose ball on the left side of the goal and depositing it home.
Murphy got her second score of the game when Julia Kiss (Bangor, PA/Bangor) lined a shot off the goalkeeper that bounced right to Murphy with a wide-open net to make the score 5-0 Colonels in the 36th minute. Mazzocca added a sixth goal in the 42nd minute with an assist from Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas). Baldwin contributed her second score of the game unassisted in the 44th minute to finish the scoring.
Wilkes finished the game with a 34-0 shot advantage and a 14-0 edge in penalty corners.
The Colonels return to action on Wednesday when they travel to the University of Scranton for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
