Box Score 2 Wilkes Women's Volleyball Finishes Wesley Quad with Saturday Sweep
DOVER, DE – The Wilkes University Colonels women's volleyball team finished their weekend quad Saturday against Farmingdale State and John Jay.
The Colonels (10-8) only dropped the first set of the day before finishing off Farmingdale State (9-7) 3-1 in a 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-15 affair, and John Jay (1-8) 3-0 in the afternoon match 25-10, 25-14, 25-20. Play-by-play stats were not available at the time of writing.
Senior outside hitter
Jamey Mikovich (Nesquehoning, PA/Panther Valley) was named to the Wesley Quad's all-tournament squad.
After dropping the first set to Farmingdale, Mikovich went to work with 14 kills in the last three sets to lift the Colonels to victory. She finished the match with 16 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore setter
Karlye Huffman (Sugar Run, PA/Wyalusing) had 41 assists and three service aces, enough to head the Colonels in both categories, while senior defensive specialist
Julie Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) had a team-leading 22 digs. Senior middle hitter
Michele Natale (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) led the way on blocks with three total.
The Colonels made quick work of John Jay in the afternoon, only allowing them to cross 15 points in a set once in the match. They put home nine service aces as a squad, with Huffman once again leading them with a trio of aces. Junior outside hitter
Christie Challenger (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Blue Mountain) and Mikovich tied for the team lead in blocks with three apiece. Mikovich also added 11 kills to her tally as well as a team-leading 15 digs. Murphy followed up the morning's performance with an additional 14 digs to help cement a dominate afternoon performance for the Colonels.
The Colonels return to the MAC Freedom trek with a trip to Doylestown, Pa. Wednesday night to face conference rival Delaware Valley at 7:00 p.m. They are 9-3 against Delaware Valley since 2008, including a 3-0 sweep last season at the Marts Center.
