Wilkes Wrestling Goes 0-3 on First Day of Budd Whitehill Duals
 
WILLIAMSPORT, PA – The Wilkes University wrestling team finished day one of the 2020 Budd Whitehill Duals Friday afternoon. The Colonels fell in all three of their matches including two defeats against ranked opponents.
 
Wilkes began the day with a 44-3 loss against No. 25 Washington and Lee before dropping a 38-3 decision against No. 23 Castleton. The day finished with a 24-14 loss against Ohio Northern.
 
The Colonels (5-7 overall) finished fourth in Pool D and will battle on Saturday with the fourth place finishers in the three other pools for places 13-16.
 
John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) scored the lone win in the Washington and Lee match when he toughed out a 6-5 decision at 174-pounds. Two takedowns and an escape gave DiVito a 5-2 lead at the end of the second period. He then added another escape with 1:15 left in the final period to seal the win.
 
Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) was the only winner in the match against Castleton as he claimed an 11-4 decision at 141-pounds. He raced out to a 6-0 lead after two periods and then added a takedown and riding time in the final frame to clinch the seven-point decision.
 
Wilkes earned four wins in the loss against Ohio Northern including two extra-point victories. Liam Flaherty (Needmore, PA/Southern Fulton) took his 157-pound bout 11-6 to start the scoring for Wilkes. DeVito then secured his second win of the afternoon, a major decision (9-1) at 174. Moustafa Almeky (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) cruised to an 8-0 major decision at 197-pounds before Roger Horton (Towanda, Pa./Athens) made it back-to-back victories for the Colonels with a 6-2 decision win at heavyweight to conclude the match.
