Last Second Goal Lifts Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey to First UCHC, MAC Victory in Program History
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's ice hockey team returned home to host the King's College Monarchs for a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) and Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) showdown with their in-town rivals.
Three different skaters found the net in the third period to help lift the Colonels (2-9, 1-4 UCHC) to a 3-2 victory over the Monarchs (1-9-1, 0-5 UCHC). The victory was the first victory in both conferences for the program and for head coach
Earl Utter.
The goal horn remained silent in the first period and throughout much of the second period. A pair of power plays allowed the Monarchs to build a 2-0 lead with goals 14:40 and 16:43 into the period after aggressive play from both sides.
The Colonels refused to give up, however, and sophomore forward
Ashley Murry (Morgantown, PA) struck first for the Colonels 6:28 into the third with assists from freshman forward
Amanda Bunje (Warminster, PA) and freshman defender
Abby Miller (Webster, NY). A 5-on-3 opportunity 14:23 into the final frame helped freshman defender
Abigail Barcless (Hamilton, NJ) notch the tying goal with assists from freshman forward
Erica Sheaffer (New Hartford, NY) and Murry.
Each team had a power play opportunity and failed to capitalize on it to break the tie, but the Colonels found more and more cracks in the Monarchs defense as the final seconds ticked away. Sophomore forward
Shauna Tubbs (Maumee, OH) broke through with 7.6 seconds left to score the game-winning goal with an assist from freshman forward
Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ). The Monarchs would go empty net for the final seconds but failed to get a shot off.
Seven different Colonels recorded a point on the evening, and as a team outshot the Monarchs 34-24. The teams split the face-offs down the middle, each winning 31. Sophomore goalkeeper
Allyson Joly (Lincoln, RI) recorded her second career victory with the Colonels and her first in both conferences after recording 22 saves on the evening.
The Colonels hit the road to continue their stretch of UCHC games. They travel to Rye, N.Y. next Friday to play Manhattanville College at 7:00 p.m., before traveling to Aston, Pa. next Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. contest against Neumann University.
