Flynn's Excellence Leads Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey in 5-2 Win Over Chatham
WILKES-BARRE –
Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ/) scored three goals and assisted on another in the Wilkes University men's ice hockey team's 5-2 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over Chatham University at the Toyota SportsPlex Friday evening.
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ/) also recorded a four-point game with four assists.
Wilkes improved to 14-5-0 overall and to 10-2-0 in UCHC games to sit atop the league with 30 points at the conclusion of the contest. Chatham fell to 2-16-0 overall and 1-10-0 in the conference.
Eric Hildebrand provided the visiting Cougars a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded goal 5:20 into the first period after a Colonels turnover in their own end. At the 8:23 mark
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) stopped Cory King on a penalty shot to keep the deficit at just one goal.
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/) evened the score at 1-1 when he deflected
Billy Berry's (Redding, CT) shot from the right boards past the Chatham goaltender at the 16:47 mark of the first.
Following a boarding penalty on the Cougars, Flynn made them pay with a power play goal off an assist from Fea 1:01 into the second period to provide the Colonels with their first lead. Just after another Wilkes power play ended the Colonels found the net again on a great passing play as Fea found Flynn who then passed the puck to
Tyson Araujo (Oak Bluffs, MA/) who found the net for the 3-1 lead at the 8:33 mark of the second.
Flynn's second goal came 14:59 into the second period as he scored again on the power play off assists from Barrow and Fea. Chatham pulled one goal back with 11 seconds left in the period when Chad Bell scored to make the score 4-2 at the second intermission.
Flynn, who entered the week as the nation's leader in goals and points, added his third power play goal 3:11 into the third period from
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) and Fea. The goal brought Flynn's total to 22 on the year and it was his 39th point.
The remaining 17 minutes saw no goals but 16 total penalties called, 11 on Chatham and five on Wilkes.
The Colonels held a 49-18 advantage in shots on goal and a 38-28 lead in the faceoff circle.
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI/), Barrow and Flynn led Wilkes with six shots each. Barrow won 12-of-15 faceoffs and
Joey Pasquini (Schenectady, NY/) was victorious on 8-of-11 to lead the Colonels.
Paterson-Jones improved to 11-2-0 on the season with 16 saves on 18 shots. Matt Calas made 44 saves for Chatham in the losing effort.
Wilkes returns to the Toyota SportsPlex ice tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. for a very important matchup against No. 14 Stevenson University. The Colonels entered the week tied with the Mustangs atop the UCHC standings with 27 points. The game will also be contested as a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) contest and if the Colonels emerge victorious they would clinch the MAC Championship.
