Colonels Notebook
• The Wilkes University wrestling team is set to compete at the 32nd edition of the Budd Whitehill National Duals on Friday, January 10 and Saturday, January 11 in Williamsport, Pa. The Colonels are in Group D and will start action Friday against No. 25 Washington and Lee University (5-2) at 10:30 a.m. Wilkes will then face No. 22 Castleton University (6-2) at 1:30 p.m. and Ohio Northern University (8-4) at 4:30 p.m. The Colonels then wrestle twice Saturday for placement. There are five nationally-ranked programs out of the 16 teams at the tournament and five nationally-ranked grapplers.
• The Colonels defeated Hunter 47-6 Wednesday to move their dual-match record to 5-4.
Nicholas Bauer (Coplay, PA/Wyoming Seminary) (125) and
Jack Bauer (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) (133) won by fall to set the tone for the match.
•
Dylan O'Connor (Somerset, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) at 141-pounds and
Roger Horton (Towanda, Pa./Athens) at 285 went 2-2 at the 87th annual Wilkes Open on December 22nd.
•
John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) earned runner-up at 174-pounds after going 4-1 at the Messiah Petrofes Invitational on December 6th and 7th.
Cody Dix (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) finished seventh at 149-pounds and
Moustafa Almeky (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) placed eighth at 197-pounds.
• The Colonels went 1-3 at the Scotty Wood Duals on November 23rd. Wilkes defeated Kent State Tuscarawas 54-6 in the opening bout before dropping matches to Central, Gettysburg and the host Muhlenberg. N. Bauer went 4-0 on the day while
Max Shaffer (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) and Devito were 3-1.
• Wilkes split a tri-match at Delaware Valley on November 16th as the Colonels defeated the host Aggies 28-19 before falling to York (PA) 26-9.
Liam Flaherty (Needmore, PA/Southern Fulton) won both of his matches on the day.
• The Colonels defeated Alvernia in Reading, Pa. 28-12 by taking six of the 10 bouts on November 13th. Flaherty, Devito and
Brady Mitchell (Bowdoin, ME/Mount Ararat) all won by fall.
• Wilkes placed in a tie for ninth out of 12 teams at the Ned McGinley Invitational Tournament hosted by King's on November 9th. Bauer placed fifth at 125-pounds after a 3-2 showing. Flaherty and Almeky placed sixth at 157-pounds and 197-pounds respectively.
• The Colonels 2019-20 roster goes 28 deep with a class breakdown of: 2 seniors; 5 juniors; 9 sophomores; and 12 freshmen.
• The roster features athletes from five states: Pennsylvania - 12; New Jersey - 12; New York - 2; Virginia - 1; Maine – 1
