Wilkes Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker at King's 73-71
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's basketball team had a chance to tie the score after getting to the free-throw line with 2.2 seconds on the clock with neither shot falling as the Colonels fell to King's College 73-71 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels are now 10-13 overall and 3-9 in league play.
King's began the game on a 5-0 run before Wilkes erased the deficit with a 14-0 run of its own forcing King's to use a timeout.
The Monarchs responded with a 7-1 run bringing the score to 15-13 with 10:50 as the Colonels called their first timeout.
King's retook the lead with an 11-5 run, going ahead 24-23 with 7:20 on the clock before a three-point play from Mark Mullins (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley) returned the advantage to Wilkes.
The Colonels entered halftime leading 35-32.
The Monarchs began the second half on a 12-4 run to take a 44-39 lead with 15:27 in the game as Wilkes called a full timeout.
King's found itself leading by nine after a three-pointer moved the advantage to 57-48 with 10:39 on the board but again the Colonels closed the deficit with an 11-3 run making the score 60-59 with just over six minutes on the clock.
Wilkes regained the advantage on Drake Marshall's (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) three-pointer with 3:33 showing on the clock that brought the score to 67-66.
After the Monarchs took a 69-67 advantage Mullins tied the score with two free throws at 1:28.
Josh Bailey converted a driving layup for King's to retake the lead with 48 seconds left on the clock.
With 14 seconds left the Colonels tied the score on a Jake Robel (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) layup off a nice find from Pecorelli.
Patrick Galvin hit a jumper fading away from the basket with 3.4 seconds on the clock leading to the final attempts from the free-throw line.
Pecorelli led the Colonels with a game-high 23 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Mullins added 17 points and seven rebounds while Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Tyler Faux led King's with 15 points while Bailey and Galvin contributed 13 points each.
Wilkes returns to action on Tuesday when it will host Delaware Valley for a 6:00 p.m. MAC Freedom game at the Marts Center.
