Strong Second Half from Pecorelli Leads Wilkes Men's Basketball Past Delaware Valley
WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University's
Rob Pecorelli (Huntington, NY/Harborfields) scored 22 second half points and finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the Colonels to an 83-68 MAC Freedom victory over Delaware Valley University on Tuesday night at the Marts Center.
Wilkes improved to 11-13 overall and 4-9 in conference play following its seventh home victory of the season. Delaware Valley fell to 6-17 overall and 2-11 in MAC Freedom contests. This was the second time the Colonels were able to defeat the Aggies this season.
Wilkes opened the game strong with a 19-2 run including baskets from six different Colonels. Delaware Valley went on a 12-8 run and brought the score to within 11 points at the 8:40 mark with Wilkes holding a 27-16 advantage. After an exchange of three-pointers from both sides the Colonels would go on a 7-0 run to give them a 37-19 lead at the 4:04 mark. The Aggies would finish the half with a 13-4 run of their own to bring them within single digits of Wilkes with the score at 41-32 going into the break.
Both teams exchanged baskets early in the second half as the Colonel lead remained at nine at the 14:05 mark. Pecorelli would then score 10 straight points for Wilkes to give them a 61-49 lead with 11:42 remaining in the contest. Delaware Valley would not cut the lead to within single digits the remainder of the game as the Colonels were able to maintain a comfortable double-digit lead and go on to win the game 83-68.
Pecorelli led the Colonels with a game-high 26 points and five rebounds. Mullins put up 16 points and added six boards.
Donovan Breeding (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) added 11 points and six rebounds, while
Derek Heiserman (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) contributed 10 points and eight boards for Wilkes.
Mike Cianciulli and Damian Washington scored 16 points each for the Aggies. Jordan Tucker finished with 10 points for Delaware Valley.
Wilkes will play its final regular season matchup on Saturday afternoon when it will host FDU-Florham for a 3:00 p.m. MAC Freedom contest at the Marts Center.
