Wilkes Women's Basketball Downs Delaware Valley 60-55
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University women's basketball team downed Delaware Valley University by a 60-55 final in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) action at the Marts Center on Tuesday evening.
The Colonels are now 9-15 overall and 3-10 in league play.
Wilkes got its first lead at 6:34 of the first quarter on a layup from Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) that made the score 3-2.
The first ten minutes ended with score tied at 13. Maddie Kelley (Dallas, PA/Dallas), Gianna Roberts (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke), and Vanessa Whitecavage (Shenandoah, PA/Marian Catholic) all finished the first quarter with three points.
Whitecavage started the scoring in the second quarter with a three-pointer followed on the next possession by a layup and free throw by Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) to give Wilkes a 19-13 lead.
In all, the Colonels outscored Delaware Valley 20-11 in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 33-24 advantage. Kelley led all scorers with seven points while Macy Berryman (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain East) and Alyssa Alfano (Dunmore, PA/Holy Cross) totaled five.
The Aggies cut the advantage to start the third quarter, notching a 6-3 run to cut Wilkes' lead to 36-30 with 8:14 on the clock, but the Colonels used a 5-1 run to make the score 41-32 with just under 2:30 remaining in the quarter.
Wilkes held a 43-36 advantage through the first 30 minutes.
Delaware Valley cut the lead to three at 58-55 with 19 seconds remaining in the game on a three-pointer, but Roberts hit two free throws to put the game away.
Roberts led all scorers with a game-high 18 points to go with five rebounds and two blocked shots. Alfano added 10 points and three assists off the bench while Kelley contributed nine points. Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) had a team-high six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Shayne Glenn led the Aggies with 15 points and seven rebounds while Jordan Hyman contributed 10 points and four assists.
The Colonels will complete the regular season on Saturday when they host FDU-Florham for a 1:00 p.m. MAC Freedom game. Prior to the contest, Wilkes will hold a ceremony to honor the teams' four senior players.
