Balanced Attack Leads Wilkes Women's Ice Hockey Over King's 4-2

PITTSTON, PA – Wilkes University's Kendall Castro (Killingworth, CT) scored a goal and added an assist on another to lead the Colonels to a 4-2 United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) victory over host King's College Friday afternoon at the Revolution Ice Center.

Wilkes recorded its fifth win of the season improving to 5-16-1 overall and 4-11-1 in UCHC play. King's dropped to 2-21-1 overall and 1-15 in conference contests following the home defeat. The win also gave the Colonels the season series sweep of their cross-town rivals after a 3-2 home victory earlier in the season.

After King's took an early 1-0 lead 2:43 into the first period, Castro broke free from Wilkes' defensive end going coast-to-coast before beating the Monarch goalie to the glove side to tie the game at 1-1. Just nine seconds later, Ashley Murry (Morgantown, PA) took a drop pass from Abigail Barcless (Hamilton, NJ) following a Laurenne Fraser (Salt Lake City, UT) face-off win and drilled a shot into the back of the net to give the Colonels a 2-1 advantage.

After spending most of the second period fighting off King's power-plays, Erica Sheaffer (New Hartford, NY) found a loose puck rebound off a shot from Valerie Koenig (Arlington, TX) and push it through the open net to extend the lead to 3-1 with under a minute left in the frame.

Julie Patterson (Trenton, NJ) added her fourth goal of the season midway through the final period thanks to a helper from Castro that help seal the UCHC road victory extending the Wilkes advantage to 4-1 with just over ten minutes left to play. King's would record its second goal of the game with under six minutes remaining but it wasn't enough as the Colonels held on for their fourth win in UCHC action this season.

Allyson Joly (Lincoln, RI) finished with 25 saves picking up her fourth win of the season in goal for the Colonels.

Wilkes held a 56-40 shot advantage and 30-27 shot-on-goal advantage, with neither team finding success on the power-pay going a combined 0-for-11.

Wilkes closes out the 2019-20 season tomorrow (Saturday) when the Colonels host MAC champion Stevenson University at 3:30 p.m. at the Toyota SportsPlex.
