Shaffer and Tallant Place at Futures Tournament for Wilkes Wrestling
ALLENTOWN, PA – Sophomore
Max Shaffer (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) and freshman
Dawson Tallant (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) placed top-four in their weight class during the Northeast/Mideast Futures Tournament on Sunday at Muhlenberg College.
The end-of-the-season tournament saw 12 Colonel grapplers compete.

Shaffer went 4-1, including three falls to earn third-place at 141-pounds. He started his day in the round of 16 with a fall in 24 seconds over Matthew Carpenter of Penn College. Shaffer followed that with another quick fall in the quarterfinals over Leslie Merchan of Hunter in 14 seconds. After a semifinal loss to Steven Schwab of TCNJ, Shaffer won by fall in 27 seconds over Zach Alexander of NYU in wrestlebacks. From there Shaffer took the third-place bout by forfeit.
Tallant started off with a 184-pound quarterfinal victory over Trent Freeman of Montclair State by a 10-4 decision. After a loss to the eventual champion in the semifinals, Tallant defeated Elmer Fajardo of Montclair State in his first wrestleback with a 7-3 decision to make the third-place match where he fell to Kal-El Corbitt of TCNJ to place fourth with a 2-2 record.
Kyle Tino (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) won his round of 32 bout with a 16-3 major decision against Sam LaCorte of NYU. After dropping a match to the eventual 149-pound champion in the round of 16, the freshman defeated Jordan Gonzalez of Hunter by fall in 4:01 during his first consolation bout. Tino then beat Skyler Minutelli of McDaniel with a pin in 2:01 and Jonah Schechtman of Stevens by a 9-2 decision before falling just short of the third-place match with an 8-5 decision loss to Eric Mougalian of Gettysburg. He finished the day with a 4-2 record.
Dylan O'Connor (Somerset, NJ/Bishop George Ahr), also at 149-pounds, started with a round of 32 fall in 1:31 over Liam Walker of Stevens and then won in the round of 16 with a 7-4 decision against Jackson Karrat of Muhlenberg. After a quarterfinals loss to Mougalian, O'Connor did not proceed in the consolation bracket to finish his tournament with a 2-1 record.
At 157-pounds
Allen Kokilananda (Annandale, VA/Annandale) started his tournament with a 5-1 round of 16 decision victory over Jonathan Gherman of Ursinus. He would finish with a 1-2 record.
Brady Mitchell (Bowdoin, ME/Mount Ararat) also went 1-2 during the tournament at 184-pounds. He picked up his victory in his first consolation bout with a pin of Freeman in 4:52.
The Colonels will hit the mat next for the NCAA Southeast Regional in Grantham, Pa. hosted by Messiah College on Friday and Saturday, February 28-29.
