Five Wilkes Wrestlers Still Alive After Day One of the NCAA Southeast Regional
GRANTHAM, PA – The Wilkes University wrestling team has five of its 10 wrestlers still alive after Friday's opening bouts of the 2020 NCAA Division III Southeast Wrestling Regional hosted by Messiah.

Wilkes is currently standing in seventh place in the team score with 44.5 points out of the 20 teams at the regional. The top three wrestlers in each of the 10 weight classes at the conclusion of Saturday's matches will advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks.
Nicholas Bauer (Coplay, PA/Wyoming Seminary),
Jack Bauer (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central),
Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson),
John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), and
Moustafa Almeky (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) will return to the mat tomorrow with a chance to claim third-place at their respective weight. Each will need to go 3-0 to head to nationals.
125 – N. Bauer, seeded eighth, started off the regional with a forfeit victory over Jeremy Berger of Johns Hopkins in the Round of 16. The sophomore then lost to the No. 1 seed in the 125-pound bracket in the Quarterfinals as Samuel Braswell of Averett won a 13-6 decision. Bauer then wrestled in the consolation second round and defeated Austin Rush of Alvernia by fall at the 4:04 mark to finish the day 2-1. He will face Jared Kuhns of York (Pa.) in the consolation third round tomorrow.
133 – J. Bauer, seeded 12th, won a preliminary match with an 18-0 technical fall over Anastasi Nelson of Washington & Jefferson to move into the Round of 16 bracket. The freshman then loss by fall to Charlie Cunningham of Washington & Lee. In the consolation first round, Bauer took a sudden victory decision by a 3-1 score over Dokota Quick of King's. Bauer then defeated Samuel Hanley of Lycoming by a 5-3 decision in the consolation second round to finish the day with a 3-1 record. He will face Damian Maver of York (Pa.) in the consolation third round tomorrow.
141 – Medrow, seeded seventh, started with a first-period fall at the 2:40 mark to win his Round of 16 match over Daniel Florentino of Washington & Jefferson. The senior then lost in the Quarterfinals to the No. 2 seed in Brandon Woody of Averett by a 19-3 technical fall. Medrow then defeated Tyrell Barney of Southern Virginia in the consolation second round with a fall in 29 seconds to finish the day 2-1. Medorw will wrestle Garret Cornell of Messiah tomorrow in the consolation third round.

Kyle Tino (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg), seeded 13th, lost his Round of 16 bout to Nick Barnhart of Messiah by fall. The freshman responded with a 14-8 decision in the consolation first round over Caleb Harmon of Averett. Tino would finish his tournament with a 1-2 record following an injury in the consolation second round to Austin Smith of Ferrum.

Liam Flaherty (Needmore, PA/Southern Fulton), seeded 13th, dropped his Round of 16 bout by a 9-1 major decision to Colby Morris of Waynesburg. The sophomore then beat Tim Sparks of York (Pa.) in the consolation ladder by a 17-7 major decision to move into the consolation first round. There he defeated Gavin Hollingsworth of Alvernia with a 14-6 major decision. Flaherty then lost in the consolation second round by fall to Alexander LaVeck of McDaniel to finish his season with a 2-2 day.

Cole Walters (Mifflintown, PA/Juniata), seeded 16th, lost to the No. 1 seed Thomas Pokilkuha of Stevens by an 18-2 technical fall in the Round of 16 and then the senior dropped his consolation ladder bout to Isaiah Deck of Averett in a tight 16-15 decision.
174 – Devito, seeded sixth, wrestled into the Round of 16 with a fall in 1:05 over Jake Nase of Delaware Valley. He then won his Round of 16 match with a 17-1 technical fall over Brandon Miller of Penn State Behrend. In the Quarterfinal, the freshman lost an 11-8 decision to third seeded Malik Barr of Ferrum. Devito then knocked off Cameron Prebble of Thiel in the consolation second round with a 17-0 technical fall in the third period to finish the day with a 3-1 record. Devito will face Dillon Charlton of Waynesburg in the consolation third round tomorrow.

Brady Mitchell (Bowdoin, ME/Mount Ararat), seeded 12th, lost in the Round of 16 to Bruce Parola of Stevens by an 11-0 major decision. Mitchell then defeated Cole Oldham of Southern Virginia with a 5-4 decision in the consolation ladder. The freshman then finished his season with a 1-2 record on the day after a consolation first round loss by fall to Al Capobianco of Alvernia.
197 – Almeky, seeded eighth, won in the Round of 16 by a second-period fall at 3:52 over Vince Wilson of Greensboro. The junior then face Anthony Wuest, the top seed, from McDaniel in the Quarterfinals and lost with a third-period fall. Almeky stayed alive for tomorrow with a 2-0 decision victory over Brody Keefe of Lycoming in the consolation second round. Almeky will wrestle Khalil Messai of Thiel in the consolation third round tomorrow.

Roger Horton (Towanda, Pa./Athens), seeded ninth, dropped his Round of 16 bout with an 11-0 major decision to Clay Chadwick of Washington & Lee. The junior then fell by a 10-2 major decision in the consolation first round to Thomas Tabatneck of York (Pa.).
Action will resume tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:00 a.m. with the consolation third round bouts.
