Almeky and Jack Bauer (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) Place Fifth for Wilkes Wrestling at the NCAA Southeast Regional

GRANTHAM, PA – Junior Moustafa Almeky (Shavertown, PA/Dallas) and freshman Jack Bauer (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) earned fifth place finishes at their respective weight classes as the Wilkes University wrestling team concluded its 2019-20 season on Saturday at the 2020 NCAA Division III Southeast Wresting Regional hosted by Messiah College.

The Colonels placed tenth overall out of 20 teams at the regional with 65.0 points. Stevens won the team title with 163.5 points. The Colonels had five wrestlers place top-eight overall in their weight class. The top three wrestlers at each weight moved onto the NCAA Championships in two weeks.

133 – J. Bauer, who was seeded 12th, defeated Damian Maver of York (Pa.) in the consolation third round with a 2-1 sudden victory decision. In the consolation semifinals the freshman lost a close 3-0 decision to Ferrum's Levi Englman. Bauer then took fifth place with a forfeit over Josiah Gehr of Messiah and finished the regional with a 5-2 record.

197 – Almeky, who was seeded eighth, defeated Khalil Messai of Thiel in the consolation third round with a 9-2 decision. The junior then lost in the consolation semifinals to Alex Donahue of Washington & Jefferson in a tight 3-1 bout. Almeky then placed fifth with a forfeit over No. 1 seed Anthony Wuest of McDaniel after he had to medically forfeit in his consolation semifinal bout. Almeky finished the tournament with a 4-2 record.

174 – John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), seeded sixth, picked up an 11-0 major decision over Waynesburg's Dillon Charlton in the consolation third round but then lost by fall to Brain Shermeyer of Messiah in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place bout the freshman lost with a 16-0 technical fall to Nicholas Konovalchik of Washington & Lee. Devito finished his standout freshman season with a sixth place regional finish after going 4-3 at the event.

141 – Kyle Medrow (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson), seeded seventh, lost by fall in the consolation third round to Garret Cornell of Messiah. The senior then closed his career with a pin of Thiel's Jason Baker at the 26 second mark to place seventh. Medrow went 3-2 at the regional and finished with 91 career victories in the Navy and Gold.

125 – Nicholas Bauer (Coplay, PA/Wyoming Seminary), seeded eighth, suffered a 20-2 technical fall to Jared Kuhns of York (Pa.) in the consolation third round and then lost the seventh-place match by fall to JD McMillin of Ferrum. The sophomore finished the tournament with a 2-3 record to take eighth.

Wilkes had previously sent at least one wrestler to the NCAA Championships for 15 consecutive seasons, a remarkable streak. The Colonels will look to restart that streak in the 2020-21 season.
