Wilkes Softball Edges Out Gwynedd Mercy 6-5

Wilkes Softball Edges Out Gwynedd Mercy 6-5

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate including two runs batted in to lead the Wilkes University softball team to a 6-5 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Monday afternoon.

Wilkes picked up its first win of the season moving to 1-2 overall. Gwynedd Mercy remained winless falling to 0-2 on the year.

After a scoreless top of the first for the Griffins, Wilkes wasted little time taking its lead. Kondras led off the game with a double and moved to third on a Britny Jumalon (Torrance, CA/Torrance) sacrifice bunt. Sarah Gibson (Chico, CA/Pleasant Valley) brought Kondras home with an RBI single to right field to give Wilkes a 1-0 lead. The Colonels loaded the bases after the next two batters, but a fly out and line out ended the scoring in the bottom of the first.

The Colonels pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the second using three hits including a Kondras RBI single and Jumalon sacrifice fly that scored Haley Boyd (Escalon, CA/Escalon). Wilkes led 3-0 after two innings of play.

Wilkes then extended its lead to 6-0 with three more runs in the bottom of the third. Gracen Staunton (Kernersville, NC/Northwest Guilford) reached on an error to begin the frame followed by an Erin Cabry (York, PA/Central York) single and Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., PA/Hazleton) walk that loaded the bases with just one out. Boyd's bunt single scored Alyson Hall (Church Hill, MD/Queen Anne's County) who pinch ran for Staunton and Kondras added her third hit of the game with an RBI single to left field to plate Cabry to give Wilkes a 5-0 advantage. Another Jumalon sacrifice fly scored Podlesney as the Colonels took a 6-0 lead into the top of the fourth.

Gwynedd Mercy finally got on the board in the fourth and sixth innings scoring one run in each frame to trail 6-2 heading into its final at-bats. The Griffins made things interesting in the seventh went they plated three more runs on three hits and one Wilkes error all with two outs, but Erika Gerace (Orwigsburg, PA/Blue Mountain) closed the door getting a pop up to first base to leave the potential game-tying and game-winning runs on base and secure the win for Wilkes.

Wilkes pounded out 14 total hits including two each from Staunton, Cabry and Boyd to join Kondras' big day.

Staunton started and went five innings allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three batters on way to the victory, her first of the season. Gerace pitched the final two innings allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits fanning one.

Wilkes is back in action this afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. matchup against Otterbein University.
