Wilkes Women's Tennis Upends Roanoke 6-3
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – The Wilkes University women's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over Roanoke College Monday morning at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center on day two of its spring break trip.
Wilkes improved to 2-1 overall following the victory while Roanoke dropped to 1-3 on the year after the defeat.
Roanoke led 2-1 after doubles play securing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 pairs. The Colonel duo of
Laura Zielinski (Mt. Wolf, PA/Northeastern) and
Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) captured the lone double victory for Wilkes taking No. 3 pairs 8-7.
Wilkes fought back in singles play to earn the victory taking five of six flights. Zielinski led off singles play with a straight set 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4.
Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win followed by
Dana Saliyev's (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 win at No. 2.
Rachel Thomas (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville) clinched the match for Wilkes with her 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 6.
Francesca Varela-Seri (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) rounded out the Colonel singles winners after she earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1.
The Colonels return to the court Wednesday with a match against Methodist University at 8:15 a.m. at Chaplin Park.
