Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Falls at Home to Wesley
EDWARDSVILLE, PA. – The Colonels hosted the Wesley College Wolverines at Bruggeworth Field for a nonconference battle between the two programs.
The Colonels (2-3) made less of their opportunities than the Wolverines (3-0) and fell in the high-scoring 17-12 affair.
After the Wolverines struck first 38 seconds into the game,
Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton) tied the squads up at one apiece. Wesley replied by scoring three unassisted goals in the next four minutes, before a
Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) goal from Lerch with 21:33 left in the half stopped the bleeding.
Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) took advantage of a card on Wesley to push the score to 4-3 with 19:16 left. The Wolverines answered with a pair of goals, but a second goal from Devitt kept the Colonels within two. Lerch and Duman both added goals after the Wolverines put one in net to keep within a 7-6 margin.
Wesley took momentum, scoring two goals before the halftime break and scoring the first two of the second frame. Devitt stemmed the tide with a goal at 22:54, but the Wolverines took advantage of a man up situation to keep a five-goal lead.
Keara Dugey (Broadheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) earned her first goal of the season soon after, but a pair of Wolverine goals put the game effectively out of reach for the Colonels, sitting with a 14-8 lead with 13:46 left to play.
Duman scored the first of the Colonels last four goals.
Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) scored another with an assist from
Brooklyn Pedana (Yatesville, PA/Pittston Area), who followed that up with a goal while up a player. Lerch finished the scoring for the Colonels after a pair of Wolverine goals a player down.
Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) recorded 11 saves and led the Colonels with five ground balls. Lerch, Duman, and Devitt had three goals apiece for the night.
The Colonels look to snap their losing skid as they host the SUNY Maritime Privateers on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Wilkes is 4-1 in the series against the Privateers.
