Fast Start by Maritime Leads to 14-7 Win over Wilkes Women's Lacrosse
EDWARDSVILLE – A 5-0 start by visiting Maritime College was key to the game in which the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team could not make up the ground in an eventual 14-7 loss at Bruggeworth Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the non-conference loss Wilkes fell to 2-4 overall this season. Maritime improved to 4-1 with its third win in three days.
Three goals by Krista Deleva and two by Nicole Johnson gave the Privateers a 5-0 lead with 16:56 remaining in the first 30-minute half.
Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) put the Colonels on the scoreboard at the 14:27 mark. A free position goal gave Maritime back a five-goal lead but then
Brooklyn Pedana (Yatesville, PA/Pittston Area) scored on a free position opportunity to make the score 6-2 with 8:27 left until halftime.
Maritime then scored two straight before Wilkes answered with two of its own. First, Devitt scored off an assist from
Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) and then Burkhardt scored from
Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton) as the score stood at 8-4 with 2:49 remaining in the half. A goal with 1:22 the clock by the Privateers led to the 9-4 halftime score.
A man-up goal gave Maritime the first goal of the second half at the 23:46 mark. Burkhardt's second of the game off an assist from
Laurel Hopfer (Monroe Twp., PA/Tunkhannock) cut into the lead with 19:14 showing on the clock.
A Maritime free position tally was then followed by two straight goals by the Colonels.
Sierra Duman (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) scored first following a shooting space foul call and that was followed by a Lerch goal off a pass from Pedana to make the score 11-7 with 10:35 left.
From there Maritime closed the game with the final three goals.
Sarah Carlini (Collegeville, PA/Pope John Paul II) made 12 saves in the loss for Wilkes while Esmeralda Hernandez made seven stops in the victory. The Colonels were led by Burkhardt's three points on two goals and one assist. Deleva led the Privateers with seven points on five goals and two assists.
Duman and Hopfer led Wilkes with three ground balls while Duman led with three caused turnovers.
Martime held a 30-20 shot advantage, 15-8 draw control lead, and a 21-17 edge in ground balls. Wilkes and Maritime were both 13-for-19 on clear chances.
Wilkes returns to action for a midweek non-conference game at Alvernia University in Reading, Pa. on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
