Nieves' Overtime Winner Keeps Wilkes Men's Soccer Unbeaten in League Play
DALLAS, Pa. –
Gabriel Nieves' (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland Senior) 94
th-minute goal helped keep the Wilkes University men's soccer team unbeaten in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play with a 2-1 win over Misericordia on Wednesday evening.
The Colonels currently sit alone atop the conference standings as the last remaining unbeaten team, reaching 3-0-0 in league play and 10-3-0 overall.
Misericordia opened the scoring with a goal in the ninth minute as the Cougars entered the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
That advantage was maintained until the 82
nd minute when
Andrew Reichard (Easton, PA/Easton Area) notched the equalizer, sending the game into extra time.
Nieves sent Wilkes home with an unblemished conference record when he stuffed home the rebound from a shot by
Matthew Horwedel (Delanson, NY/Schalmont Senior).
Zach Tone (Easton, PA/Easton Area) made four saves to earn the win in goal.
Nieves finished with a game-high six shot attempts (three on target), nearly matching the Cougars team output of seven. The Colonels as a team finished with 12 shot attempts.
Wilkes will look to remain perfect on the pitch Saturday when it travels to Arcadia for a 1:00 p.m. MAC Freedom contest.
