Murphy's First Quarter Goal Lifts Wilkes Field Hockey Over King's 1-0
WILKES-BARRE, PA – Wilkes University's
Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter and the Colonels defense held strong on way to a 1-0 shutout MAC Freedom victory over cross-town rival King's College Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win Wilkes snaps a three-game losing skid improving to 3-11 overall and 2-3 in MAC Freedom games. King's slipped to 4-9 overall and 0-5 in league contests.
Murphy took a pass off of a penalty corner from
Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and fired home a shot from the top of the circle at the 10:27 mark of the opening frame which proved to be the game-winner for the Colonels.
King's had several scoring chances throughout the rest of the first half and into the second half of play, but each of the Monarchs 20 shots (seven on goal) were denied by a strong Colonels defense and the play of goalie
Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) who finished with seven saves and her first shutout of the season.
King's also had an advantage in penalty corners garnering 13 attempts to the Colonels three.
Wilkes returns home Saturday for another MAC Freedom contest against DeSales University on Senior Day starting at 5:00 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.
