Wilkes Women's Soccer Explodes for Seven Goals on Senior Day

EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's soccer team exploded for seven goals following its senior day celebration honoring the eight Colonels playing their final season in the Navy and Gold. Wilkes got scoring from seven different players as it took down Neumann University 7-0 in its final non-conference contest of the year at Bruggeworth Field  on Saturday afternoon.

The team's seven scores are the most since a 7-0 win over Clarks Summit on September 16, 2013.

The Colonels improved to 4-5-2 on the season with the victory.

Wilkes got the scoring started early when Emily Bidelspach (Myerstown, PA/ELCO) and Karyna Vargas (Rahway, NJ/Rahway) found themselves with no defenders between them and the Knights goalkeeper as Bidelspach passed to Vargas, who was able to put home the shot for a 1-0 lead in the third minute.

The same tandem combined to give the Colonels a 2-0 advantage in the 10th minute, this time with Vargas passing up the middle to a streaking Bidelspach for the breakaway score.

Victoria Burkhart (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) got in on the scoring in the 23rd minute when she headed in a crosser off a corner kick from Vargas to make the advantage 3-0.

Mia Scelsa (Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) scored her first career goal in the 39th minute when she tipped in a cross from Erica Feese (State College, PA/State College Area).

Cesia Diaz (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) finished the first-half scoring when she picked up a loose ball off a corner kick and lined it home as the Colonels held a 5-0 lead after the initial 45 minutes.

Tatiana Mancera (Miami, FL/Archimedean Upper Conservatory) put home a deflection off another cross from Feese in the 71st minute.

Holly Feese (State College, PA/State College Area ) finished the scoring in the 88th minute when her sister Erica crossed the ball from the right baseline to the middle for the tip-in.

Wilkes held a 26-3 shot advantage with 17 finding their target compared to jusyt two for Neumann. The Colonels also held a 9-3 lead in corner kicks for the game.

Lauren Sweeney (West Chester, PA/West Chester Rustin) earned the win for Wilkes stopping two shots.

The Colonels return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Misericordia for a 7:00 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game.
