Barrow Overtime Goal Pushes No. 13 Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey to Seventh Straight Victory
HERSHEY, PA. -- The Lebanon Valley Flying Dutchmen gave the No. 13 Wilkes University Colonels men's ice hockey squad everything they could handle at the Hersheypark Arena in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) throw down Friday night.
The Colonels (7-0, 4-0) would not be denied as a goal from senior forward
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/Saint Anthony's) sealed the 4-3 victory over the Flying Dutchmen (1-6, 0-5) with just 52 ticks left before a tie.
The Colonels dominated the first period against Lebanon Valley. Senior defender
Michael Gurska (Revere, MA/) started the scoring at 2:32 with help from sophomore forward
Jimmy O'Kane (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame Prep) and junior forward
Billy Berry (Redding, CT/). Senior forward
Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY/) netted the first of two power play goals for the Navy and Gold at 5:09 with assists from forwards first year
Max Cocchi (Ludlow, MA) and graduate Taylor Brierly. Lebanon Valley struck at 12:30, but Barrow put home the first of his two goals at 18:13 on the power play with help from first year defender
Cole Jungwirth (Bloomington, MN) and Gurska.
The second period would be all Flying Dutchmen as they scored two goals in a little over three minutes in the early going. A power play goal at 2:50 followed up by an even strength goal at 5:58 tied the game at 3-all. Neither team was able to break the stalemate, battling back and forth but unable to score any more in regulation.
Barrow found the game winning goal in overtime, however, with an assist from Gurska at 4:17.8 to seal the game and keep the Colonels win streak alive as they head into their first home puck drop.
The Colonels outshot Lebanon Valley 29-23 and edged them out in faceoffs 31-27 in a hard fought back and forth affair. Junior goalkeeper
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY/) bounced back with a 20 save game, allowing only two even strength goals in 64:17 in net. Gabriel Pigeon had 25 saves in the loss for Lebanon Valley.
After seven games on the road, the Colonels finally open their 2021-22 home slate at the Toyota SportsPlex tomorrow night. They play host to the Arcadia Knights for the first time in program history for a MAC and UCHC tilt at 5:00 p.m. as they look to continue their undefeated start.
