Two Crowned, Nine Top-Four as Wilkes Wrestling Finishes Second at Wildcat Invitational
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Wilkes University wrestling finished second overall at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Penn College on Saturday as two Colonels earned championships and four finished runner-up in their respective weight classes.
Wilkes finished with a team score of 169.5, behind only the 223.5 earned by Castleton.
FULL RESULTS
At 149-lbs,
Kyle Tino (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) earned the three seed and received a bye into the round of 16. From there, Tino earned a 7-4 decision over Cooper Leszczuk of Gettysburg in the round of 16, earned a fall at 7:00 in the quarterfinals over Castleton's Nick Roeger while ahead 8-3, and got to the finals with a 1-0 decision over Castleton's Elijah Cyr, the second-ranked wrestler in the weight class. Max Shaffer (Doylestown, PA/Archbishop Wood) in the finals, earning the 7-5 decision over his Colonels comrade.
Shaffer earned the No. 4 seed in the weight class, which also came with a bye into the round of 16. In the next round, Shaffer earned a fall of Gettyburg's Jon Cermeno at 3:16 while ahead 12-0. In the quarterfinals Shaffer earned another pin, this time of Castleton's Darius Mangiafico in 43 seconds after earning the takedown two. Shaffer then met TCNJ's Steven Schwab, taking an 8-4 decision before falling to Tino in the finals. Other Colonels in the 149-lbs weight class were
Allen Kokilananda (Springfield, VA/Annandale), who finished 0-2, and
Benjamin Griffith (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh), who finished 2-2 with a 12-2 major decision over Kokilananda and a medical forfeit.
Colton Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area), who is currently the No. 9 ranked grappler at 184-lbs according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), Honorable Mention by d3wrestle.com, and No. 1 in the Southeast region of the NWCA, earned the title at 184 following four straight wins. Babcock was the No. 1 seed at 184, earning a bye into the round of 16 where he pinned Lycoming's Matthew Knapp in 53 seconds. In the quarterfinals, Babcock pinned TCNJ's Joe Daddario in 6:45 before earning his third straight pin in the semi-finals over Union County College's Alex Dorce to gain a bid to the finals. In the championship, Babcock took a 15-2 major decision victory over Castleton's Sampson Wilkins.
Quentin Day (Annapolis, MD/Severn School) finished 0-2 in the weight class while
Dawson Tallant (Cape May, NJ/Middle Township) went 1-2.
Alexis Perez (Mahanoy City, PA/Mahanoy Area) finished 2-2 and
Brady Mitchell (Brunswick, ME/Mount Ararat) rounded out the Colonels at 184 going 1-2.
At 125-lbs,
Austin Fashouer (Scranton, PA/West Scranton), Honorable Mention at d3wrestle, earned the top seed and a bye in the round of 16 where he earned a 24-7 tech fall of Union's Frank Silva. In the quarterfinals where he advanced to the semifinals on a medical default at 5:09 while leading 5-1. In the semifinals Fashouer earned a fall of Lycoming's Garrett Lee in 3:35 before falling in the championship to Castleton's Kaya Bogle.
Nicholas Bauer (Coplay, PA/Wyoming Seminary) earned the three seed at 125, going 3-2 to earn the fourth-place finish.
At 133-lbs,
Jack Bauer (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central), the third seed, advanced to the quarterfinals after earning a 3-2 decision over TCNJ's Larry Melchionda. Bauer defeated Lycoming's Thomas Conselyea in a 10-1 major decision before besting TCNJ's Kyle Nase 3-1 to earn a bid to the finals, where he was defeated by Castleton's Michael Gonyea.
Rene Trevino (Rio Grande City, TX/Rio Grande City) finished 1-2 on the day to round out the weight class for Wilkes.
At 141-lbs,
Collin Rolak (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township) held the No. 2 seed and a bye to the round of 16 where he was defeated by Lycoming's Chase Chapman. From there, Rolak earned five straight wins to finish fourth in the class. Other's in the weight class included
Michael Richardson (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial),
Josef Lundin (Edmonton, AB/Vimy Ridge Academy), and
Joseph Casella (Matamoras, PA/Delaware Valley).
At 157-lbs,
Ayden Dillon (Littlestown, PA/Littlestown) went 3-2 and
Carson Wells (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Township) finished 1-2.
James Shaw (Campbell Hall, NY/Burke Catholic),
Christopher Mann (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan),
Benoit Chestnut (Roselle Park, NJ/Roselle Park) rounded out the Colonel competitors in the class.
At 165-lbs,
Charles Everdale (Freeland, PA/Hazleton Area) finished 3-2 with
Devin Doty (Port Jervis, NY/Minisink Valley) and
Trevor DuBoff (Stony Point, NY/North Rockland) finishing for Wilkes.
John Devito (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) finished 3-2 at 174-lbs while
Christopher Nuss (Gore, VA/James Wood) went 1-2.
At 197-lbs,
Cameron Butka (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) entered as the No. 2 seed earning a bye into the round of 16 where he earned a tech fall of Penn College's Derek Kallenborn. In the quarterfinals, Butka faced off with Tyler Phenegar of Elizabethtown, whom he defeated earlier this week in the team's dual meet, earning a tech fall at 16-0 after 2:42. Butka earned a 6-2 decision in the semifinals over Castleton's Haven Tatarek before falling in the finals to Castleton's Chance Lapier.
Austin Cominsky (Cape May Courthouse, NJ/Middle Township) earned a bye to the round of 16 as the No. 5 seed, pinned Lycoming's Peter Kenny in 1:51 before being defeated in the quarterfinals. Cominsky then went 3-1 in the consolation bracket to earn a fourth-place finish.
Hunter Lowe (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill) went 2-2 and
Kevin Falcon (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) finished 1-2.
At 285-lbs,
Sean McCurdy (Philadelphia, PA/Academy of the New Church) finished 4-2 while
Brian McKinnon (Highland Lakes, NJ/Ridgewood) went 0-2.

th when it travels to Elizabethtown College for the Blue Jay Classic starting at 9:30 a.m.
