Third Quarter Surge Fuels Wilkes Women's Basketball Victory at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, PA – The Wilkes University women's basketball squad concluded the 2021 part of their Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom slate with a road trip out to face the Arcadia Knights Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels (4-6, 2-2 MACF) put the Knights (2-6, 1-3) effectively away with a 20-10 third quarter run on their way to a 70-55 victory.

The squads exchanged haymakers in the first quarter, with the Colonels striking first with a 12-4 run to put the Knights in a 16-8 hole fueled by seven points from junior guard Katelyn Kinczel (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield).  The Knights erased the deficit and took a slim 17-16 advantage into the second frame with a 9-0 run of their own, with seven points from Julia Makowski.

A 7-3 run gave the Knights their largest lead of the day up to that point to start the second frame, but the Colonels answered with an 8-1 run with four different scorers to take a 27-25 lead.  Neither squad was able to gain ground on the other, and the two went into the locker room with the Colonels up 30-29.

The Colonels steadily built up to a five-point lead halfway through the fourth quarter, but a 10-4 run starting at 5:13 put Arcadia down 50-39 heading into the final frame.  The Colonels continued their hot shooting hand into the fourth frame, outscoring the Knights 20-16 and never letting the Knights get within closer than 11 points for the rest of the game.

Kinczel led all Colonels with 15 points, while fellow junior guard Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) and sophomore guard Julia Marino (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township) finished with 13 and 12 points respectively.  Sophomore center Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) finished with a team-high nine rebounds and added in eight points and four blocked shots for good measure.

The Colonels continue their five-game road swing with a trip out to Gwynedd Valley, Pa. next Saturday.  They play Gwynedd Mercy at 2:00 p.m., who they beat 73-71 in their lone live stats era matchup back in 2019 at the Marts Center.
