Wilkes Women's Basketball Drops Conference Contest at Misericordia
DALLAS, PA. – The Wilkes University women's basketball team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest at Misericordia University by a 65-52 final on Wednesday evening.
The Colonels are now 3-6 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Misericordia started the game on a 4-0 run forcing Wilkes to use its first timeout just under three minutes into the contest. The Colonels came out of the timeout with six straight points on layups from
Julia Marino (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township),
Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson), and
Katelyn Kinczel (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield) to take their first lead of the game. After reaching the 4-0 advantage, the Cougars would miss their next eight shots forcing them into a 30-second timeout. Misericordia held the lead after the initial 10 minutes at 9-8.
The Cougars started the second quarter on a 7-2 run taking a 16-10 lead with 7:54 remaining until halftime. Wilkes was outscored 21-14 over the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 30-22.
The Colonels were unable to cut into the deficit as Misericordia outscored them 20-12 in the third quarter, trailing 50-34 three-quarters of the way through the game.
Wilkes cut the score to nine at 59-50 with just over three minutes remaining after two
Baylee Guedes (Thompson, PA/Palmerton) free throws, however, the Cougars finished the game on a 6-0 run to reach the final.
Shober led the Colonels with 14 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Kinczel added 10 points and four rebounds while
Julianna Askins (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) contributed nine points off the bench.
Alyssa Bondi led all scores for Misericordia with 25 points. Skylar Downing added 12 points off the bench to round out the double-digit scorers for the Cougars.
Wilkes returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Arcadia University for a 1:00 p.m. MAC Freedom contest.
