Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Falls Short Late in Goaltender Duel at Stevenson

STEVENSON, MD. – The Colonels traveled to face the Stevenson Mustangs in a rematch of last year's United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) matchup against their Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) rivals.

The Colonels (1-2, 1-2 UCHC) fell short in the final minutes in a 3-1 loss against the Mustangs (4-2, 1-1) after a late power play goal.

Wilkes struck first in the first period, scoring at the 12:49 mark in a 5-on-3 power play.  Junior forward Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY) netted the first strike, with assists from sophomore defender Toon De Schepper (Nieuwenrode, Belgium) and junior forward Tyler Dill (South Lake Tahoe, CA).

The scoring went quiet for the remainder of the first and most of the second period.  Stevenson struck next with a power play goal at 16:39 in the second.  The two remained tied up until late in the third as the horns remained quiet for extended periods of time.  Stevenson netted a game-winning power play goal at 17:52, followed up by an empty netter at 18:27 in the period.

Sophomore goaltender Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) saved 24 shots off of 26 shots faced, while Dill led the Colonels with six shots on goal. The Colonels and Mustangs were neck and neck in most categories.  Both recorded 27 shots on goal and both won 30 face offs.  Junior forward Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ) won 14 of the 22 faceoffs he took.

The Colonels look to bounce back with a home-and-away doubleheader against Nazareth next weekend.  Wilkes travels to Rochester, N.Y. Friday evening, while they host the Golden Flyers at the Toyota Sportsplex Saturday the 6th.  Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
