King's String of Goals Sinks Wilkes Women's Lacrosse
EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting King's College recorded strings of seven and eight goals to defeat the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team 22-7 Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) opener for both teams.
With the loss Wilkes dropped to 0-2 overall and to 0-1 in the conference. King's improved to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the MAC Freedom.
The Colonels started the game hot, holding a 4-2 lead with 18:51 left in the first half.
Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) opened the scoring 2:02 into the game with a goal off the left side of goal. After the Monarchs took a 2-1 lead, Devitt scored again on a similar play to even the score at the 25:42 mark.
Keara Dugey (Broadheadsville, PA/Pleasant Valley) then scored on a free position shot and
Laura Bayzick (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) made it three consecutive tallies for Wilkes off an assist from
Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton).
King's would then score the next six goals to enter halftime with an 8-4 lead. The Monarchs would add their seventh straight goal to open the second half. Devitt completed a hat trick to stop the King's run with 25:36 left in the game. Over the next 12 minutes the Monarchs would put the game out of reach with eight goals in a row to take a 17-5 lead.
Dugey then scored her second of the game on a man-up free position shot after a King's yellow card. Later Devitt would add her fourth goal of the game on a free position chance.
Brooklyn Pedana (Yatesville, PA/Pittston Area) led Wilkes with six ground balls and Bayzick had six draw controls.
Ashley Coughlin (Northampton, PA/Northampton) made 10 saves for the Colonels and had four ground balls.
King's was led by eight points on four goals and four assists from MK Klodarska. Jen O'Connor scored a game-high six goals and had 11 draw controls. Emily Sims added three goals and two assists for five points. Emma Lehman and Celia Medina also scored hat tricks for the Monarchs. Jessie Smalley made six saves for King's to earn the win.
King's led 32-13 in shots on goal, 24-19 in ground balls, and 16-13 in draw controls. Wilkes was successful on 11-of-17 clears while King's went 13-for-18.
The Colonels return to action on Tuesday for a MAC Freedom trip to DeSales University for a 4:30 p.m. game.
