Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Drops Road Contest to DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, PA – The Wilkes University women's lacrosse team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) game by a 16-6 score on Tuesday at DeSales University.

Wilkes dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in conference games while DeSales improved to 2-2 overall and stayed unbeaten at 2-0 in MAC Freedom games.

The Bulldogs scored the first five goals of the game including two on the man-up and two on the man-down to take a 5-0 lead with 12:56 left in the first half. Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) put the Colonels on the board with her team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 7:38 mark. Laura Bayzick (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) scored the other Colonels goal in the first half at the 4:37 mark off an assist from Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace). DeSales led 9-2 after the first 30 minutes.

After DeSales scored to open the second half, Wilkes answered with two goals from Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton) just 33 seconds apart to make the score 10-4. Lerch's first goal of the season came at the 25:58 mark off the second assist of the day from Burkhardt.

Savannah Bauman (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) scored her first goal as a Colonel on a free position shot at the 17:14 mark and Devitt also scored on a free position opportunity at 11:41 but Wilkes was unable to cut the goal deficit to less than six in the second half.

Lerch and Laurel Hopfer (Monroe Twp., PA/Tunkhannock) led the Colonels with four ground balls while Lerch and Delaney Lukowski (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) caused two turnovers. Lerch, Bauman, Bayzick, and Lukowski each had two draw controls for Wilkes. Ashley Coughlin (Northampton, PA/Northampton) made a season-high 11 saves for the Colonels.

Eilis McCall led DeSales with six points on three goals and three assists while Dani Towey had four goals and Marina Bradley had three goals and one assist. Rachel Sheubrooks earned the victory with nine saves.

The Bulldogs led in shots 33-23, shots on goal 27-15, and draw controls 10-8. The two sides were even with 21 ground balls each. Wilkes went 12-for-21 on clears while DeSales was 19-for-22.

Wilkes has a quick turnaround with another MAC Freedom road tilt tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. against Arcadia University.
