Bauman's Late Goal Lands Wilkes Women's Lacrosse Win at Arcadia

GLENSIDE, PA – Junior midfielder Savannah Bauman (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) scored with 18 seconds remaining to push the Wilkes University women's lacrosse team to an 8-7 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) victory at Arcadia University Wednesday night. The victory was the Colonels first conference win since April 27, 2016, snapping a 23-game conference losing streak and is the first MAC Freedom win for head coach Sarah Burkarth.

Bauman recorded four goals in the contest, all in the second half including a goal with 3:22 remaining to tie the game and then the late game-winner.

Wilkes improved to 1-3 overall and to 1-2 in the MAC Freedom while Arcadia dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.

Camryn Devitt (Northampton, PA/Northampton) opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the game for the Colonels on a free position chance. The Knights would score the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead with 8:35 left in the first half. Ashley Burkhardt (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) scored with two seconds left until half to make the score 3-2 after the first 30 minutes.

Devitt then scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season 1:18 into the second half off an assist from Burkhardt to tie the game at three. The hosts responded with the next two goals to go ahead 5-3. Bauman then netted her first of the game with 18:46 remaining and then tied the game at five with a free position shot with 15:53 left.

Arcadia went ahead again 6-5 with 9:05 left but Laura Bayzick (Hazleton, PA/Hazleton Area) answered off a feed from Burkhardt just 32 seconds later to tie the score once again. A free position goal by Skylar Acker put the Knights ahead again with the score at 7-6 with 7:03 left.

Bauman then tied the score with 3:22 on the clock for her hat trick after Brooklyn Pedana (Yatesville, PA/Pittston Area) picked up a ground ball following an Arcadia free position chance that went wide of goal and the Colonels were able to complete a successful clear. Jessica White (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) then caused a turnover with 1:35 left which set up the Colonels with the ball and a chance to win. Bauman did the rest with her third free position goal of the game with 18 seconds left.

Pedana led Wilkes with six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Delaney Lukowski (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) and Bayzick had four ground balls each and Lukowski, White, and Domenica Lerch (Northampton, PA/Northampton) each caused three turnovers. Bauman led Wilkes with four draw controls while Lukowski added three and Lerch one.

Ashley Coughlin (Northampton, PA/Northampton) earned her first win in goal for the Colonels with six saves. Emily Griffith made eight saves for Arcadia. The Knights were led by three points from the stick of Alex Arena on two goals and one assist.

Wilkes led 16-13 in shots on goal while Arcadia held a slight 24-23 lead in total shots. The Colonels led 22-17 in ground balls and the Knights edged the Colonels 9-8 in draw controls. Wilkes went 14-for-19 on clears and Arcadia was 14-for-22.

The Colonels return home to start a three-game home stand when they host Stevens at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Ralston Athletic Complex for a MAC Freedom game.
