Wilkes Men's Ice Hockey Powers Past Neumann 4-1
WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's ice hockey team powered past Neumann University by a 4-1 final in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play Friday evening at the Toyota SportsPlex. The Colonels got goals from four different players in the game.
Wilkes improved to 5-3-0 on the season and in UCHC play while Neumann fell to 1-4-2 overall and in the league.
The Colonels struck early on at the 3:42 mark of the first period when
Tyler Dill (South Lake Tahoe, CA) stole the puck at the blueline as the Knights attempted to breakout of their zone, forcing the puck to
Donald Flynn (Randolph, NJ) who did the rest by skating into the zone and ripping the puck past the goaltender from the right side of goal for the 1-0 lead.
Nick Fea (Oak Ridge, NJ) scored next at the 9:42 mark of the second period on the power play. Flynn and
Tyler Barrow (Massapequa, NY/Saint Anthony's) picked up assists on the play to put Wilkes ahead 2-0.
Two goals within 36 seconds of each other in the third period put the game squarely in the Colonels corner. Barrow scored first at the 9:32 mark off assists from
Phil Erickson (Eau Claire, WI) and
Devon Schell (Scarsdale, NY).
Billy Berry (Redding, CT) then followed with a wraparound goal as
Ben Stefanini (Framingham, MA) and
Dylan Kuipers (Andover, NJ) were credited with the helpers to make the score 4-0.
Danny Cangelosi broke up the Colonels shutout attempt after he stole the puck at the top of the Knights zone and took it in on a breakaway to make the score 4-1 at the 17:21 mark of the third. The Colonels were able to kill off a penalty to close the game as Neumann skated 6-on-4 with the goalie pulled as well. Wilkes was strong on the penalty kill all game, forcing Neumann to go 0-for-6. Wilkes was 1-for-4 on its power play chances.
Michael Paterson-Jones (Baldwinsville, NY) made 28 saves on 29 shots to earn the victory for Wilkes. Kyle Pantalone made 38 saves on 42 shots in the crease for Neumann.
Flynn and Barrow each finished with one goal and one assist to lead the Wilkes offense.
