No. 18 Stevens Defeats Wilkes Men's Lacrosse 21-6
HOBOKEN, NJ – No. 18 Stevens Institute of Technology controlled a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest from the outset on its way to a 21-6 victory over the Wilkes University men's lacrosse team Wednesday night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Wilkes fell to 1-5 overall and to 1-3 in MAC Freedom action with the road defeat while nationally ranked Stevens improved to 4-1 overall and stayed perfect in the league at 4-0.
The Ducks jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the first 10 minutes with three goals coming from Ryan Gebhardt. The Colonels netted their first goal at the 5:46 mark of the first quarter when
Ethan Weaver (Olney, MD/James Hubert Blake) cashed in his sixth goal of the season. Weaver added another goal at the 3:43 mark with an assist from
Jacob Kadis (Westminster, MD/Delone Catholic) to make the score 6-2 before Stevens scored the final two goals of the first 15 minutes to lead 8-2.
Stevens then scored the first six goals of the second quarter to take a commanding 14-2 lead. Weaver completed his hat trick with 36 seconds remaining until halftime to make the score 14-3 at the break.
Alex Myers (Cortland, NY/Cortland) scored his seventh goal of the year from
Nico Lorenzo (Howell, NJ/Howell) to open the third quarter and
Luke Palladino (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) scored on the man-up with help from Myers for his seventh of the year as the Colonels and Ducks played a 2-2 third quarter.
The Ducks closed the game strong scoring five of the six fourth quarter goals for the 21-6 victory. Lorenzo tallied his fifth goal the season unassisted in the final quarter.
Daniel Cox (Stratford, CT/Stratford) made a career-high 19 saves in net for the Colonels and he also tied for the team lead with three ground balls. Lorenzo and Myers also had three ground balls.
Gebhardt led Stevens with five goals while four other Ducks had three points and 15 in total found the scoresheet. Shawn Coulter had a game-high six ground balls while Bubba Brennan had four caused turnovers. Danny Tierney earned the win in goal for the Ducks.
Wilkes went 13-for-21 on the clear while Stevens was 15-for-17.
The Colonels remain idle through the Easter break with their next game scheduled for Wednesday, April 7 at Delaware Valley for a MAC Freedom matchup at 7:00 p.m.
