Misericordia Sweeps Wilkes Softball in MAC Freedom Series
DALLAS, PA – The Wilkes University softball team lost both ends of Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) doubleheader Thursday to Misericordia University at the Anderson Softball Field. The Cougars won game one 8-1 and game two 8-3 in five innings after the game was stopped due to darkness.
With the victories Misericordia swept the four-game season series from Wilkes. The Colonels are now 2-8 overall and in league play while the Cougars are 11-1.
Caylee-Mae Williams (Yuba City, CA/River Valley) knocked her first-career home run in the first inning of game one to put Wilkes ahead 1-0 early. Misericordia responded with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the frame to even the score and then took the lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI double. The home team added another run each in the fourth and fifth innings and then four runs on three hits and two Colonels errors in the sixth for the 8-1 final.
Hope Mullins (Midland, VA/Liberty) (1-1) took the loss, going 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
Rhia Aurand (Avondale, PA/Avon Grove) pitched 1.0 innings in relief allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Erin Cabry (York, PA/Central York) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Colonels in game one.
Alexa McHugh (6-0) went 7.0 innings allowing one run on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts to stay unbeaten in the circle for the Cougars. Megan Murphy was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in game one.
Misericordia scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning of game two to grab the advantage. Wilkes battled back in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally.
Jordyn Kondras (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) started the rally with a single to center and was followed by a Cabry walk.
Rachel Pritchard (Wilmington, DE/Concord) then drove in Kondras with a single which chased the Cougars starter from the game. Williams then doubled to bring in Cabry from second.
Brianna Silva (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) then pinch ran for Pritchard at third and she would score on a wild pitch to make the score 4-3. Misericordia was then able to get out of the jam with a pickoff play at third base after
Nicole O'Rourke (Staten Island, NY/Susan E Wagner) walked. The Cougars added four runs in the bottom of the fifth, three coming off the bat of Antonia Pacillo with a home run. The game was then called due to darkness after five complete innings with Misericordia winning 8-3.
Pritchard (0-4) went 5.0 innings allowing eight runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts. Kondras led Wilkes at the plate going 2-for-3.
Jessica Oltman (4-0) went 4.2 innings to earn the win. She allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Emily Wenner pitched the final 1/3 of an inning allowing one hit and one walk.
