Wilkes Women's Tennis Advances to MAC Freedom Semifinals with 5-0 Blanking of King's
EDWARDSVILLE – The Wilkes University women's tennis team continued its fine play in the MAC Freedom Championship Tournament as the #1 seed Colonels posted a 5-0 sweep of #8 seed King's College Tuesday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
Wilkes improved to 11-0 overall on the season following the postseason victory. King's season ended at 1-9 overall.
Wilkes raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play and never looked back.
Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) and
Zoe Klein (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) scored an 8-2 win at No. 1 pairs to begin the match.
Sarah Malone (Williamsport, PA/Loyalsock) and
Dagney Markle (New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) posted an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles while
Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) and
Kaitlyn O'Neil (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) added an 8-5 victory at No. 3 to round out the Colonels scoring.
Cieri then took her No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-0 to push the lead to 4-0 before Malone clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3.
Wilkes' No. 1, 2, 4, and 6 singles players all held one set leads before the match was called.
The Colonels advance to the semifinals of the MAC Freedom Championship Tournament on Thursday and will host #4 seed Misericordia University at the Ralston Athletic Complex. Winner earns a trip to the championship match on Saturday.
