Murphy's Two Goals Lift Wilkes Field Hockey to First Win of the Season
ELMIRA, N.Y. –
Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored the game's first two goals to lift the visiting Wilkes University field hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Elmira College Sunday Afternoon.
Wilkes earned its first win of the 2021 season moving to 1-3 overall on the year. Elmira fell to 0-4 overall on the season. It was the first win with Wilkes for head coach
Charlotte MacDonald.
Murphy broke open a scoreless game at the 27 minute mark notching an unassisted tally to put the Colonels up 1-0. Five minutes into the third quarter, Murphy struck again, this time off a helper from
Bridget Rosenfeld (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) to extend the advantage to 2-0.
Elmira's Katelin Bailey cut the deficit in half at the 48:53 mark, but
Ali Dunn (Pittston, PA/Pittston) sealed the non-league road win with her second goal of the season off an assist from
Maura Hensel (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) with just under nine minutes to play.
Wilkes held an 18-6 shot advantage throughout the contest while garnering 10 penalty corners to Elmira's three attempts.
Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) earned her first win of the year in the cage for Wilkes finishing with three saves.
Wilkes returns to play Wednesday when the Colonels travel to Reading, Pa, for a matchup against Albright College starting at 7:00 p.m.
