Wilkes Field Hockey Comeback Falls Short against Undefeated Wilson
EDWARDSVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University field hockey squad continued their 2021 season by hosting Wilson College Saturday afternoon.
The Colonels (1-4) mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter but fell to the undefeated Phoenix (6-0) in a 4-2 affair.
The first half of the game and change were an all-Phoenix affair. Wilson scored at 1:39, 21:53, 28:22, and 31:18 to take a 4-0 lead immediately after halftime. The Phoenix outshot the Colonels 14-1 in the first half of play.
The Colonels did not give up, however, and ended up outshooting the Phoenix 6-5 in the second half of play. Senior forward
Morghan Murphy (Mountaintop, PA/Crestwood) scored her fourth goal of the season at 49:22, and scored her fifth at 57:52. The Colonels were unable to generate more offense to keep the comeback alive and fell 4-2 to the Phoenix.
Murphy scored both goals for the Colonels and led the team with four shots. Junior
Abigail Davis (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) had a pair of shots as well while sophomore goalkeeper
Carly Eidle (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) had nine saves to her name on 19 shots faced.
The Colonels look to bounce back from their defeat with a three-game road swing through Pennsylvania. They start at Bryn Mawr, Pa. tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in a non-conference matchup against Bryn Mawr College. This is the first time the two squads will meet in the live stats era.
